    A short history of Que Sera (What will be!)

    She was delivered to me on my 53rd Birthday, just in time for two work colleagues sand me to take, and pass, our Yachtmaster practical test after the theory course was completed over the previous few months.

    We immediately knew that she was an excellent handling boat with the huge advantage of the short keel as we spent the first 4 summers sailing around the Solent and south coast with cruising holidays down the West Country (Fowey, the Yealm, St Maurs, Helford River, etc.). Then one of my Yachtmaster crew suggested we should do The 2008 ARC. This was a fabulous venture. The main difficulty, as we were still working, was to find the time to get her to the start in The Canaries – rather further away than we had thought and which was done in legs. Crossing the channel from Falmouth in heavy winds and seas with heavy rain and then fog to the Chanel du Fort was a challenge for which the boat was well equipped and the radar fundamental.

    The boat stayed over in Brest for a couple of weeks before heading across Biscay to La Corunna. We encountered the worst force 7/8 I have ever been in as we sailed straight into a westerly down the ’shelf ‘with its enormous high seas. On reaching La Corunna, I knew that both the boat (really strong) and the crew were up to whatever the Atlantic could throw at us! After that we sailed frequent hops down the Portuguese coast with lovely weather (just one thunderstorm) accompanied by dolphins across to The Canaries.

    The Arc itself was 3 weeks of pure pleasure. We were the seventh smallest boat. The extra kit installed was invaluable. The additional water tanks had already made the boat a good coastal cruiser but the water maker meant we each had a much needed shower every day. The excellent Duogen in ‘tow mode’ produced enough charge to keep the self-steering and navigation gear running all night, and the strobe at the masthead meant we were very visible to other shipping. The radar was excellent at spotting storm/rain clouds coming at night so that we could get the spinnaker down in time and the Bimini essential during the Day. The food and fresh food lasted and we even made our own bread! So we arrived happy……….

    We kept Que Sera in the Caribbean for a couple of seasons and had enormous pleasure sailing there. Then we shipped her back to the Med – shipped because it can be really hard on both boat and crew and take at least 6 weeks. We berthed her in Alicante where she was looked after excellently and spent two trips a year sailing her around the Balearics until choosing to keep her berthed in a new marina at Mahon, Menorca.  Again the English yard looked after her well. We had the ten year rig checked and were amazed at how little needed replacing after the distances she had travelled. This area, overnighting as we did in the many coves, was again a major plus for the short keel and the other cruising extras such as the water maker and extra tanks.

    Sadly the time has come for her to go - knees and balance are not what they used to be and grandchildren don’t like going at 30 degrees!  So a motor launch it now is. I trust whoever takes her over will have as much enjoyment and safe sailing as we have done – She is a great cruiser.
